Blog - Why Art?

My first art lesson was part of my training at the Ontario Teacher's College. I grew up in a small town and art was not part of my environment. The high school did not offer art or music programs. Unfortunately, I spent the first 40 odd years of my life saying "I can't draw. I can't do art." However, during my 30 years as an elementary teacher, I learned that art could be a great tool for helping children learn. I consider myself a life-long learner and art became something I needed to learn.
I started taking evening art classes to have more to offer my students but soon came to love it for my own entertainment. Now, 14 years into retirement, it has become a full time career. I am still learning to draw, I paint in oils, acrylics and pastels, I make sculptures and this year started learning printmaking.
Art has helped me remove the word "can't" from my vocabulary.
